I bought Otto off of eBay because I liked his looks –and because I got him for $15. He actually works, a surprise given that he came from eBay. He’s been well used and doesn’t walk very well, even on hard surfaces. I fixed some of that by adding rubber pads to the bottoms of his feet.
Otto is aimed at young children. He is very talkative and will tell you (lame) jokes and riddles and he can play some simplistic games. His primary game is “Simon” and is played with the four colorized buttons atop his head. Otto recognizes when light go out or come on, by falling asleep after saying goodnight, and waking up with a cheery hello.
His primary function for me is to sit on my shelf and look cool, which he does a great job at. I do play with it from time to time, but like I said, he is oriented to kids between 6 and 10 years old.
I would have thought that my two year old granddaughter would adore Otto, but on her first meeting, she regarded it with great suspicion, and when it spoke, she recoiled in horror and left the room. Odd, she seems to like the old Smurfs in cartoons, so it’s isn’t racism about his blue color. But if you look closely at his face, he does look a bit empty-headed in a maniacal sort of way.
I think he’s kind of cute, and as I said earlier, he looks cool. But thinking it over, I guess I’ll take out his batteries when I’m not watching him. You never know.
